Entry To The APNT Entry to the associationThere are five different categories of membership of the APNT, Student, Associate, Affiliate, Full and Corporate Members. Student membership is compulsory for those who are currently undertaking APNT courses of study at accredited schools. Associate membership is open to non practicing therapists and therapists who practice therapies not represented by the APNT but who still wish to belong to the Association. Affiliated membership is open to therapists who are not APNT qualified but who have satisfied the Executive Committee of their knowledge, experience and professional competence. Affiliated members may choose to work towards Full membership either by sitting the APNT examinations or by satisfying the 'grandfather clause', an explanation of which is given below. Full membership is open to those who have passed the APNT examinations or who have satisfied the grandfather clause as laid down by the British Massage Therapy Council. That is, the Association can take in to account up to four years of practice in which the prospective member can show a minimum number of 300 hours of recorded practice in any one qualifying year. Some approved post graduate work (CPD) may also be allowed. A year of such practice may be seen as the equivalent of receiving 20 teaching hours so therapists whose course of study was less than the 150 hours minimum recommended by the BMTC can still be considered. Corporate membership is for those organisations who wish to support the aims and objectives of the Association. Corporate members will benefit from 4 free advertisements or one mailing with each newsletter. The criteria for becoming a Full member of the APNT are under the discretion of the executive committee. For the benefit of those therapists enquiring about joining the Association, but who do not already hold APNT qualifications, the following chart shows the minimum recommended hours of study expected of students attending APNT accredited schools. Students are
expected to take the Anatomy and Physiology module and pass the required
examination in addition to their chosen therapy subject. Students of
Aromatherapy and Therapeutic Massage are required to have undertaken the
Swedish Massage module in addition to the hours required by the
Therapeutic and Aromatherapy syllabi.
The ongoing setting up of national standards for each therapy by the various therapy councils and other bodies are reflected in the course requirements and entry criteria for the APNT. Please call us on 07966.181588 if you are unsure which category of membership is available to you. Continual Professional DevelopmentMembers are required to undertake a minimum of twenty hours of professional development throughout the year. First AidFull members are expected to hold a current First Aid or other certificate showing competence in CPR techniques. New Full and Affiliated MembersA certificate of membership which is suitable for display in treatment rooms and clinics is issued to every member. Every full and affiliated member of the association is eligible to use the letters "APNT" after his or her name and to use the Association's logo on headed paper, compliment slips, business cards and leaflets. Misuse of the logo or credentials is strictly forbidden.
