    Sheila Kean - APNT Chair

Sheila entered the world of complementary therapy via a chance encounter on a remote Greek beach. The ensuing journey into a new career and lifestyle has been equally magical and unusual. Previously a science and psychology teacher in secondary schools and FE, Sheila graduated in Therapeutic Massage in 1985 and in Craniosacral Therapy in 1986 and began building a practice in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Within a few years there was no time left to fit in teaching as her practice grew. She still works in the same clinic and her busy practice specialises in working with babies, children and their families.

Having assisted her own massage teacher for four years, Sheila finally succumbed to local requests for a massage training and established the Maitri Foundation in 1991. This massage school has provided a training in Therapeutic Massage and Advanced Massage seminars ever since.  In the first few courses Ron Mercer, our APNT treasurer, was a most able and supportive co-teacher and help-mate. In more recent years Sheila has shared the teaching and development of the courses with her partner, who is also a massage and craniosacral therapist. Needless to say, the school has always been affiliated with the APNT!

Since 1993 Sheila has taught Craniosacral Therapy in the UK and abroad. Teaching abroad has enabled her to indulge her love of visiting foreign (and increasingly exotic and wild) places with Martin, her partner. Taking regular holidays is a great resource to Sheila, as is living in a quiet, rural village where the only sounds as she writes this are bird song.  Sheila and Martin have two grown up daughters. The household is completed by 2 dogs who form the excuse for the regular rambling walks which are part of the framework for Sheila’s day.

During her time as Chair of APNT Sheila hopes to complement the excellent day to day running of the organisation by focussing on specific projects such as bringing the Code of Ethics up to date and simplifying and making more user-friendly, rarely used, but important procedures. She is pleased to have an opportunity to put back some time and skills into an organisation that has served her well, both as a practitioner and as a teacher, over many years.
