APNT AGM 2004 It’s a shame if you missed it…. The AGM 2004 was held in April in Dursley, Gloucestershire. It was a lively and enjoyable day and spoke a great deal about the type of organisation that we are. We thought you might like to read some of the comments our delegates offered. We’d love to see you at next year’s AGM – please make a note of the date now – it is Sunday April 3rd 2005. Sunday April 25th dawned sunny and warm, this bode well for the day which would round off a good weekend – and it did. This day saw 40+ members of the APNT gather at Kingshill House, Dursley, Gloucestershire for our AGM and CPD day. There was plenty of time at the start of the day to take refreshment, start to look at the marketplace and, of course, have hugs and kisses with people we’d not seen for a while and intro’s – as familiar or otherwise – with “strangers”. The AGM was delivered in informative but informal style - with bags of M&M’s distributed (thrown) by Ron, to people with good recall and brave enough to shout out the answers to his questions about his presentation. On time we split into our pre chosen syndicates, the choices were one out of these two – Mario-Paul Cassar’s Neuromuscular Technique or John Holman’s Hydrotherm. I attended the latter and learned a lot about a piece of equipment designed by John to give the therapist stress free access to all parts of the client whilst laying supine (or on their side) throughout the treatment, using heated water filled pads. A new range of oils, based on ayurvedic principles complemented John’s client centred approach. Lunch followed the morning’s sessions, time to mingle outside in the sunshine, inside in the marketplace (trying out hydrotherm) and of course eat the fantastic food prepared by an APNT member a choice from two hot meals, salads, breads and choice from two deserts (or both!). The afternoon also started on time, a reflection of the excellent organisation. This time the pre chosen syndicate choices were Yvonne Foster Palmer’s La Stone Therapy or Denise Hopley’s Sports Therapy. Having attended yearningly Yvonne’s fascinating demonstration previously I chose Denise’s workshop. Presented with a case history scenario of a stiff Achilles in a marathon runner we were guided through diagnostic techniques and then treatment – a demonstration (thank you Rachel – in joke, if you were there you’ll understand that he, Rachel, has more than an Achilles problem) followed by practical in pairs. Full handouts completed a really excellent and useful session which had obviously been fully thought through and well prepared. Thank you Denise. This was an excellent day. All this and 5 CPD points for just £15! How did the committee do it? I am so glad that I made the 160mile round trip to be with the other 40 something people who came. Deb Berry, Herefordshire Joan and I have just attended our first
AGM and have to tell all of you who could not attend that you need to
put it in your diary NOW for 2005. As well as supporting a pro-active
executive of (as you all know) a very dynamic and professional
association, you will also enjoy a day of good company (people like you),
workshop options that will teach you things you didn't know and
excellent food!. We travelled 3 hours to attend and it was the best value
for fuel and time spent for many a day. AGM's at our association are NOT
boring so we look forward to seeing twice the already impressive number
attend next year. Now where did I put my CPD points for having such a good
day??? Terry Cullen APNT, BCMA, Horsham, West Sussex I enjoyed it rather more than I expected to. Bryan Robson, Cheltenham
The business part of the AGM was informative, well structured and passed relatively quickly and painlessly! It was great to meet members of the APNT committee in an non-exam environment too! I feel that the added extra of the workshops helped to swell the numbers of attendees at the AGM, which made the day for me. As a new therapist it was wonderful to meet and chat with so many other (and experienced) therapists, and everyone was so friendly, welcoming and accepting of each other that it was quite overwhelming and left me with a lovely warm feeling for the rest of the day. I enjoyed the workshops – LaStone Therapy and Hydrotherm – and it was good to be able to physically experience a little of both. However I did find the Hydrotherm workshop to bbe quite a hard sell, which put me off finding out as much about it as I might have done. Deborah Weaver, Yorkshire
“Orgasmic” A really good meeting of like minds, with fantastic food and conversation, not to mention the workshops covering four very different aspects of massage. I enjoyed the diverse conversation at lunchtime, gaining an insight into others’ practices, pitfalls and achievements. The hydrotherm workshop gave me the opportunity to experience an amazing new technique of massage and to be massaged by three other delegates simultaneously x 7!! How much pleasure can you take?! (note from ed – see initial comment!!) Even the reports were interesting, and the accounts positively fun, due to Ron’s question and answer tactics and, of course, the sweeties!! Lorraine Rustell, Gloucestershire This year's A.G.M. was the first I had attended, having only just completed my course of study with Sheila and Martin at the Maitri Foundation, and I was so glad I went along. Whilst it was really good to initially meet up with friends who had also just finished our training, it was the opportunity to meet representatives from other Therapies that was so interesting. To be able to hear the questions and discussion points answered from different perspectives was really valuable. In addition, the two workshops I attended on Neuromuscluar Technique and LaStone Therapy were both excellent. Having used Mario-Paul Cassar's book as part of our course study made it of particular benefit to have him explain and demonstrate the techniques in person. On the other hand, I had never heard of LaStone Therapy, but the idea of using heated rocks for massage sounded wonderful - and they certainly felt good from the try-outs we had at the end of the workshop. All in all I came away feeling really re-energized and reaffirmed in the value of the training we had just completed and the positive difference massage can make to people. Now where are those case studies I've got to complete ......... Gail Olivant Gloucestershire The
AGM was very enjoyable. It was strange as a somebody who had just passed
their exams but had not qualified because of having to make a mental
change from being a student therapist to being a real therapist. Everybody
was very friendly and interested in who you were and what you did. It was
good to be treated as equals.
